Another season characterised by an ever-changing lineup, which, taken in conjunction with the previous campaign, served to underline the fact that at this stage Horsforth were not ready to compete at this level of the game. It was also a season marred by clubs dropping out of the league, something which was to become an increasing issue in forthcoming years. Only seven sides finished their fixtures in the Combination's second tier, and it was particularly frustrating that the win and draw against Corpus Christi which represented our only points up to the end of October were expunged when the opposition resigned.

Jonathan Postle was the regular first choice between the sticks, with Neil Harrison disputing the jersey for the first half of the season and Scott Robinson deputising when required in the latter stages. The defence alternated between and three and a four, with new club captain Phil Smith a consistent performer. Jon Vernon, Andy Gough and Steve Sedgwick were other contenders for central defensive roles, while Dean Herron and Chris Jones usually held down the full-back roles when the defence was a foursome. There was little consistency about the midfield either, with Jamie Francis and Craig Harrison the backbone, aided and abetted by Jake Harvey and Iain Service - both of whom also played in defence with distinction - among others, including a mid-season comeback by Lee Monaghan.

HFFC 2012-13:
Back - Jake Harvey, Jamie McCafferty, Tom Low, Jonathan Postle, Neil Harrison, Tom McCarthy, Ed Banham, Phil Smith, Woody.
Front - James Thorp, Jon Vernon, Simon Parker, Craig Harrison, Dave Scott, Scott Robinson, Jamie Francis, Lee Monaghan, LK.

It wasn't all bad news though. Jamie McCafferty was available more often, and augmented the midfield or attack. As autumn set in, David Shapland became a regular started, on the left of midfield or the defence, while Tom Wilson added a touch of steel at the heart of the side. One of the biggest pluses was the form of Dave Scott up front, as the side began to score goals more regularly, either on his own or with Jamies Francis or McCafferty. Scott Robinson and, as ever Simon Parker, also featured in attack from time to time.

A performance of immense character won us points away to Beeston St Anthonys, one of the few highlights of the season, though injury incurred by Phil Smith robbed us of any impetus this might have given us. Jamie Francis resumed as captain as the season wore on, there was another important new arrival in David Lloyd, and Steve Skillern returned to the ranks.

There was to be one final moment to cheer, an astonishing 8-1 win over Swillington Welfare, but overall this was very much a season to be forgotten. Sixth place out of the eleven teams who were scheduled to start the season in this division would have been respectable, but sixth place out of the seven who finished it could never be counted anything other than a disappointment, and the effective total of six points, after all the resignations were taken into account, represented the poorest return since the club's inaugural season.
