During the summer of 2013, in the face of a worsening exodus of clubs from Sunday football, the Combination's structure underwent another major overhaul, and their decision to place Horsforth in the third tier - arguably relegation in all but name - would not be welcomed. In the event, however, it proved to be exactly the spark the club needed, as we took on a new lease of life in what was again to be known as Division One (the second level now reverting to its previous name as the Premier).

After losing our opening game at home to the Daisy, the team went on a nine game unbeaten run in the league, and quickly established ourselves at the top of the table. A wretched defeat at the hands of nearest rivals Waggon Athletic in December was soon consigned to history as there followed another run of seven games without loss. One final hiccup against the Engine at home in March kept the contest alive, as Waggon ended the season needing to win their three remaining games, and by a total of more than 10 goals, in order to overtake us. They fell at he first hurdle, Manston Wanderers inflicting the damage, and the championship was ours.

Perhaps it was disappointing that, unlike our Division One win a mere three years earlier, we didn't play on the last day of the season to make it happen, but we did everything that was asked of us, and didn't arrange the fixtures.

Lee Mon's 500th game:

Back: Kev Collier, Jack Ambler, Steve Skillern, Chris Jones, Jack Pope, Jon Vernon, Olly Roper, Jamie McCafferty, Dave Scott, Phil Smith, Woody, Jamie Francis, and even I got in on this one. Front: Tom Wilson, Shane Wright, Craig Harrison, Simon Parker, Lee Monaghan, Dave Shapland, Scott Robinson, Dean Herron.

Jack Pope was recruited at the start of the season, and quickly made the keeper's place his own. The defence was a movable feast, as usual: right-back Jon Vernon and long-time squad member Ed Banham were prominent in the early games, while Chris Jones was as ever in and out of the side, mainly at left-back. Phil Smith, still the club captain, played most of the games until the turn of the year, while Steve Sedgwick's welcome appearances were scattered fairly evenly throughout the campaign. Tom Wilson, recruited as a midfielder the previous season, spent most of this term in the defence. Mention should also be made of much-travelled veteran defender Dean Lock, who enjoyed a brief spell stiffening up the side when we most needed it.

The midfield was to undergo a major rejuvenation. Jamie Francis was again a key figure in the centre, with newcomers Rob Wilson and Dave Howarth adding greatly to the class in that area, and with Jamie McCafferty playing mostly as a midfielder this time around there was healthy competition all season. Craig Harrison was generally asked to operate down the right, with Steve Skillern or David Shapland on the left, though Dave Lloyd and Shane Wright also kept the squad bubbling over in this department - so much so that Lee Monaghan could finally just about hang up his boots at last, though he did manage an historic 500th appearance for the club in November. Up front, there was another great boost in the return of Anthony Bell, coupled with a resurgence in goalscoring form from Simon Parker, culminating in his 250th goal for the club in October, a record which surely will never be broken. Dave Scott was in fine form too, sharing the top scorer prize with Parker.

The Division One trophy was presented to Horsforth - again - at a photocall at The Bridge, and once again we looked forward to promotion to the Combination's second level.
